Clipboard and Focus

If Genie fails to read or write data to the FileMaker Script Workspace, it is usually due to a loss of window focus or missing system-level permissions.

  • Symptoms: Failed to add selection, legacy/native Failed to grab selection, or Failed to prepare clipboard.
  • Cause: Focus was lost in Script Workspace, or FileMaker is not responding to the programmatic clipboard request.
  • Fix:
    1. Click directly on a script step in Script Workspace to ensure it is the active focus.
    2. Press Cmd+C manually on your keyboard.
    3. Return to Genie and retry the action. This manual priming often restores the connection.
  • Symptoms: No Script Workspace window detected.
  • Cause: Script Workspace is closed or hidden behind other FileMaker windows.
  • Fix: Open Script Workspace in FileMaker (Scripts > Script Workspace...) and ensure it is front-most before using Add Selection, Add Scripts, Clear Context, or Apply Code in Genie.
  • Symptoms: Enable Accessibility for Genie or Accessibility not enabled.
  • Cause: macOS requires explicit permission for Genie to interact with other applications like FileMaker.
  • Fix:
    1. Open macOS System Settings.
    2. Navigate to Privacy & Security > Accessibility.
    3. Ensure the toggle for FileMaker, or the Genie host app, is turned on.
    4. If it is already on, try toggling it off and back on again.
