FAQ
Who is Genie for?
Section titled “Who is Genie for?”Genie is built for FileMaker developers and teams who want an AI workbench inside the FileMaker workflow: scripts, calculations, metadata, queries, data/schema work, and IDE-agent handoffs.
Is Genie just another AI assistant for FileMaker?
Section titled “Is Genie just another AI assistant for FileMaker?”No. Genie includes chat, but the product is a FileMaker-native AI workbench: Script Workspace capture, Calculation Quick AI, metadata grounding, QUERY/DATA workflows, Local MCP agent handoff, Workbench staging, and review-first apply behavior.
Do I need both activation and provider credentials?
Section titled “Do I need both activation and provider credentials?”Yes. Activation unlocks Genie. Provider credentials give Genie access to the models you choose.
See Licensing and Activation and AI Providers.
What should I use first: ASK or CODE?
Section titled “What should I use first: ASK or CODE?”Use ASK when you want explanation, troubleshooting, or a plan. Use CODE when you are ready to request a script change.
See Daily Workflows.
Can Genie change my file without review?
Section titled “Can Genie change my file without review?”Genie is designed around explicit review and confirmation steps. ASK stays read-only, CODE is review-first, and DATA requires explicit confirmation.
See Safety and Confirmation Model.
When should I use Add Selection instead of Add Scripts?
Section titled “When should I use Add Selection instead of Add Scripts?”Use Add Selection for the current script or selected rows. Use Add Scripts when the task depends on multiple open scripts.
See Context Capture.
What is Local MCP Bridge for?
Section titled “What is Local MCP Bridge for?”It lets external MCP clients on the same machine use Genie as a FileMaker-aware agentic workbench. They can read metadata/context, call read-only inspection and query tools, and stage supported CODE or DATA work into Workbench for review.
The bridge is not a hidden apply channel. Genie still owns CODE safety, DATA confirmations, and final review.
See Local MCP Bridge.
What is Calculation Quick AI?
Section titled “What is Calculation Quick AI?”Calculation Quick AI is the small native overlay in FileMaker’s Specify Calculation dialog. It drafts one calculation expression from the current dialog context and inserts draft text only after validation and drift checks.
See Calculation Quick AI.
