System Specs
Genie is a plugin for FileMaker Pro on macOS and Windows. The two platforms use separate packages and have different feature sets.
Platform
Section titled “Platform”- FileMaker Pro 19 through FileMaker Pro 2026
- macOS 11 or newer, on Apple silicon or Intel (Rosetta included)
- 64-bit Windows supported by your FileMaker Pro installation, with Genie for Windows 1.5.11
- Genie installed and loaded in FileMaker Pro
- English FileMaker UI recommended; Genie documentation and UI also come in French and Spanish
Genie uses a native .fmplugin bundle on macOS and a signed 64-bit .fmx64 plugin on Windows. Install the package that matches the operating system; the two stable downloads are intentionally separate.
The macOS menu bar, Dock, Apple code-signing, and dmg_zip updater instructions are macOS-only. Windows uses its own signed plugin package and FileMaker’s Windows plug-in preferences.
Local and hosted files
Section titled “Local and hosted files”Genie writes scripts and layouts in both local and hosted FileMaker files.
Platform differences
Section titled “Platform differences”The docked Script Workspace panel and the Genie tab in Layout mode are macOS only. Genie for Windows 1.5.11 is a separate plugin with its own interface.

Questions, scripts, data, and layout requests all start in the same Genie chat on both platforms.
Product access
Section titled “Product access”Genie is free. It needs no licence key and does not expire. A paid key unlocks script writing, executable data changes, external MCP coding and execution, and Workbench actions on both platforms. On macOS it also unlocks layout creation and editing and QuickCode.
Local MCP reads are free. External staging, Workbench actions, script runs, and evaluation require a paid plan.
Provider credentials do not replace a Genie licence, and a Genie licence does not include provider usage.
Your own Claude Code or Codex (optional)
Section titled “Your own Claude Code or Codex (optional)”On macOS you can use a Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) through Claude Code, or a ChatGPT plan with Codex access through Codex, instead of an API key. This needs Genie 3.3 or later, Local MCP turned on and running (Genie offers a Turn on button), Local MCP Privacy Mode off, and an internet connection. After you confirm, Genie installs the program for you in ~/.local/bin, with the publisher’s own installer. It needs no Node, npm, Homebrew or administrator password, and sign-in happens in your browser. It is not available in Genie for Windows. Claude Code and Codex.
Provider
Section titled “Provider”Configure one provider and model in Settings. Custom / Local requires an OpenAI-compatible endpoint and model ID. Genie is bring-your-own-key.
Network
Section titled “Network”- Cloud providers and optional web search require internet access.
- The free version of Genie with a local provider can operate without a Genie licence request.
- A stored paid key uses cached state and is checked on specific events. Ordinary startup, focus, and visibility changes do not poll the licence service.
Permissions
Section titled “Permissions”- On macOS, Microphone permission enables dictation.
- On macOS, Accessibility permission enables Script Workspace capture.
- On Windows, follow the FileMaker and Windows permission prompts shown by the installed Windows build.
- Missing FileMaker privileges can block metadata, read-only queries, data changes, or script runs.
FileMaker version-sensitive reads
Section titled “FileMaker version-sensitive reads”Some exact reads, such as field definitions, depend on the FileMaker build. On a FileMaker release Genie does not recognize, those reads stop with an error instead of guessing.
